WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY
The World Environment Day (WED) established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 is a people's event. It inspires action by governments, industries, community groups and individuals to improve the environment. It provides unique opportunity to raise awareness on environment and mobilise action by all stakeholders. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has invited people world over to celebrate the WED on 5th June 2015 with enthusiasm.
UNEP has decided “sustainable consumption and production” as theme for the WED on 5th June 2015. Evidence is building that people are consuming far more natural resources than what the planet earth can sustainably provide. If current consumption and production patterns remain the same, by 2050 we will need three times earth’s resources to sustain a population expected to reach 9.6 billion. UNEP has also decided a slogan “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care.” to effectively communicate above mentioned theme with the people around the world.
