The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Govt. of India has recently notified the following Waste Management Rules.

 

  • The Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016
  • The E-waste (Management) Rules, 2016
  • The Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016
  • The Construction and Demolition Waste Management Rules,2016
  • The Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Trans-boundary Movement) Rules, 2016.
  • The Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016

 

 1)   The Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016

 

The Plastic Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2011 were notified (notification number S.O 249(E), dated 4th February, 2011) by the erstwhile Ministry of Environment and Forests and amended from time to time for regulating the framework for management of plastic waste generated in the country.

 

With a view  to implement these Rules more effectively and to give thrust on plastic waste minimization, source segregation, recycling, involving waste pickers, recyclers and waste processors in collection of plastic waste fraction either from households or any other source of its generation or intermediate material recovery facility and adopt polluter’s pay principle for the sustainability of the waste management system, the Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change notified the revised rules as The Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016 vide notification G.S.R. 320(E) dated 18th March, 2016.

 

 

2)   The E-waste (Management) Rules, 2016

 

The Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change notified the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016 vide notification G.S.R. 338(E) dated 23rd March, 2106 in suppression of the E-Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2011. The new Rules shall come into force from 1st October, 2016.

 

 

3) The Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016

 

To implement the Bio-Medical Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 1998 more effectively and to improve the collection, segregation, processing, treatment and disposal of bio-medical wastes in an environmentally sound management thereby, reducing the biomedical waste generation and its impact on the environment, the Central Government reviewed and in suppression of these rules, new rules as the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016 are notified vide Notification No. G.S.R. 343(E) dated 28th March, 2016.

 

4)     The Construction and Demolition Waste Management Rules, 2016

 

The Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change notified the Construction and Demolition Waste Management Rules, 2016 vide notification G.S.R. 317(E) dated 29rd March, 2106 in suppression of the Municipal Solid Wastes (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000.

 

5)    The Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Trans-boundary Movement) Rules, 2016

 

The Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change notified the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016 vide notification G.S.R. 395 (E) dated 4th April, 2016 in suppression of the Hazardous Wastes (Management, Handling and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2008.

 

6)    The Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016

 

The Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change notified the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 vide notification G.S.R. 1357 (E) dated 8th April, 2016 in suppression of the Municipal Solid Wastes (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000.
